Base launched in August 2023 with unusual restraint for a crypto product. No token. No airdrop. No ecosystem fund with nine zeros in the announcement. Coinbase, navigating SEC scrutiny at the time, positioned the chain quietly as infrastructure and let the product speak.
Two and a half years later, Base is one of the most active Ethereum Layer 2 networks by transaction count, the primary chain for consumer crypto applications, and the execution layer for a growing wave of AI agent activity. That trajectory was not accidental.
How Base Works
Base is an optimistic rollup built on the OP Stack, the same open-source framework that powers Optimism. Transaction execution happens off Ethereum’s main chain: users submit transactions to Base’s sequencer, which orders and executes them, then periodically posts compressed transaction data back to Ethereum L1 as blobs (post-EIP-4844) or calldata.
The “optimistic” in optimistic rollup means transactions are assumed valid by default. A seven-day fraud proof window allows anyone to submit a challenge proof if they can demonstrate the state posted to L1 is incorrect. If no valid challenge arrives within that window, the state is finalized.
EIP-4844, which introduced blobs as a cheaper data-posting format in March 2024, was significant for Base specifically. Blob data is cheaper than calldata and is pruned from Ethereum nodes after a short window rather than stored permanently. The practical result: average transaction costs on Base dropped sharply. Most simple transfers and token swaps cost fractions of a cent.
Coinbase operates the single sequencer. This is the most important architectural fact about Base, and we will return to it.
The Distribution Moat
Most Layer 2s compete for users through token incentives, grants programs, and liquidity mining. The mechanics are well-worn: bootstrap TVL with temporary yield, hope that organic usage develops before the incentives expire.
Base’s advantage is different. Coinbase has over 100 million verified users. Many hold crypto on Coinbase’s centralized exchange. Coinbase’s Smart Wallet product, launched in 2024, allows a user to create a self-custodial Ethereum wallet using their Coinbase account credentials. No seed phrase. No separate app. The onboarding path from fiat to on-chain activity collapsed from days to minutes.
This distribution moat is structural. A VC-funded L2 cannot replicate Coinbase’s brand recognition with retail investors, its KYC-verified user base, or its regulatory compliance history. When consumer crypto applications need a chain with the highest probability of reaching new users, Base is the obvious answer. That logic is self-reinforcing: more consumer apps choose Base, which brings more users, which attracts more apps.
What Is Actually on Base
Base’s transaction composition reflects its consumer orientation.
Memecoins and social tokens drove significant early volume. DEGEN, a token distributed to Warpcast (Farcaster) users based on social engagement, launched on Base in early 2024. It was one of the first tokens with a genuine social-network distribution mechanic: users earned DEGEN by participating in Farcaster, then spent or traded it on Base. The cycle attracted other character tokens and the broader memecoin activity that followed.
Farcaster integration created a tight loop between a growing decentralized social network and Base as its execution layer. Farcaster Frames, which embed interactive applications inside social posts, frequently use Base for on-chain actions. Tipping, minting, voting, and collecting all became low-cost enough on Base that they could be casual user behaviors rather than deliberate financial decisions.
NFT minting moved substantially to Base after EIP-4844. Minting on Ethereum L1 was already expensive before 2024; after blob fees reduced L2 costs, the case for L1 NFT activity mostly collapsed for creators without established markets. Zora, which allows anyone to mint on-chain, became one of Base’s highest-activity protocols.
AI agent infrastructure represents the newest layer of Base activity. Coinbase’s AgentKit provides developers with tools for building autonomous agents that can hold wallets, execute transactions, and interact with DeFi protocols. The x402 payment protocol, which allows agents to pay for HTTP resources using USDC on Base, uses the chain as its settlement layer. Machine-to-machine payments at near-zero cost require exactly the kind of infrastructure Base provides.
Revenue: Sequencer Economics
Coinbase earns revenue from Base through sequencer profits. The sequencer collects transaction fees from users and pays the cost of posting data to Ethereum L1. The difference is Coinbase’s gross margin on Base.
A portion of that sequencer revenue flows to the Optimism Collective as part of the OP Stack licensing arrangement. The Optimism Collective has committed to using those funds to support public goods in the Optimism ecosystem. From Coinbase’s perspective, this is the cost of using a battle-tested, open-source rollup framework.
The absence of a Base token means Coinbase cannot dilute its economics through token emissions or use a token to subsidize activity artificially. Base’s growth has been built on product utility. That is either a sign of sustainable demand or a constraint on how aggressively Coinbase can incentivize the ecosystem, depending on your view.
The Centralization Problem
Base’s centralization is not hidden. Coinbase acknowledges it. The question is whether it matters for the use cases Base serves.
The single sequencer creates three specific risks.
Censorship capability. Coinbase could exclude transactions from specific addresses. It has not done so publicly, but the technical capability exists. Coinbase is a US-listed, SEC-regulated company with a compliance function that responds to regulatory pressure. If US regulators required Coinbase to block certain on-chain activity, Base’s sequencer is the enforcement point. This is not hypothetical: centralized exchanges have responded to OFAC sanctions by blocking wallet addresses, and Base’s sequencer is structurally similar.
Operational single point of failure. Base goes down if Coinbase’s sequencer infrastructure fails. A fallback mechanism exists (users can post transactions directly to L1), but it is slower and more expensive. Sequencer downtime has occurred on Base and on other OP Stack chains.
Validator committee decisions. When unusual on-chain events have occurred on other chains with similar governance models, validator committees have intervened in ways that raised questions about protocol neutrality. Base has not faced a significant test of this kind, but the governance structure inherits similar risks.
Coinbase has committed to sequencer decentralization as part of the OP Stack’s broader roadmap. The path involves fault proofs (now live on OP Mainnet), permissionless proving, and eventually multi-sequencer operation. Progress has been gradual. As of early 2026, Base is still a single-sequencer chain.
The Bet and Whether It Worked
Coinbase’s thesis with Base was direct: distribution beats decentralization for the next wave of crypto users. A chain with Coinbase’s user funnel at the top is a different product than a permissionless chain with theoretical decentralization but limited reach.
By transaction volume and developer activity, that bet has largely worked. Base competes with Arbitrum and Optimism on daily active addresses without a token incentive program. Consumer crypto applications that need broad user reach consistently choose Base over alternatives with stronger decentralization properties.
The unresolved question is not whether Base can attract users. It is whether the centralization trade-off is acceptable as Base’s use cases grow more financially significant.
For consumer applications (social, minting, small payments, AI agent micropayments), Coinbase’s control over the sequencer is an acceptable trade for the user experience and distribution benefits. For high-value DeFi protocols that require censorship resistance, it is a harder argument. A protocol cannot claim to be censorship-resistant if it operates primarily on a chain where a single US company controls transaction ordering.
Base is two years old and is already the most consequential product Coinbase has built since its exchange. Whether it becomes the default infrastructure layer for mainstream crypto or a distribution-advantaged walled garden depends on one thing: whether Coinbase follows through on sequencer decentralization before the stakes of centralization become too high to ignore.
The timeline for that is not clear. The incentive to move quickly is.
